The Secrets of Successful Blogging

The most important thing to know about blog readers is that they have exceptionally short attention spans: if you can't hold their interest for more than 20 seconds you're gonna lose them to ESPN.com or Facebook or whatever. First of all, you've gotta have a unique background and layout to hook folks in. Something classy and eye popping; you know, like this operation here. Once they're in, you've gotta relieve the horrible tedium of reading with frequent Youtube breaks and sub-headings. Also, inserting graphs and links to respectable sources no one will read heightens your credibility as a expert. The person writing is usually more important than the actual blog content in determining the blog's popularity, so make sure you've got an impressive/humorous profile picture and insert lots of irrelevant personal detail into your posts to liven them up a bit.

  1. I sometimes lose interest in needlessly long blog posts...there are, however, a handful of authors whose work I so respect and writing I so enjoy that the length is not an issue. Like you, though, I generally prefer brevity. I look forward to following your blog this semester.

  2. Great choice on the background...looks familiar. I completely agree with the idea of keeping blog posts brief. There's no need to ramble on and add in all the fluff - we're not trying to fulfill a word requirement here.

  3. It was an interesting thought that the person writing is more important to the blogs popularity then the blog content. I completely agree with this statement and is true that even if a blog is informative if it is boring it is not something I am going to wast my tie reading. I like the idea of personal data to make it more interesting. Great points!
